But it is science applied to unique and complex individuals, and therefore it is more relational than transactional,” says American physician and author Abraham Verghese. A cherished medical quote of yesteryear reminds us that “the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient”. Scientific advances must be wed with human connection, compassion and understanding.
Verghese joins kaupapa Māori academic, Leonie Pihama, co-editor of Ora: Healing Ourselves – Indigenous Knowledge, Healing and Wellbeing to discuss more empathetic approaches to healing our communities. From integrating indigenous approaches to healing that encompass cultural connections with families, communities and land, to reflecting on the importance of storytelling in medical professions, this conversation will re-evaluate traditional Western perspectives of medicine.
