For best-selling, Women’s Prize longlisted and Ockham NZ Book Award-winning fiction writer Emily Perkins, finding the right voice is essential to getting a writing project off the ground. The point of view, sounds, rhythms and vocabulary of your prose all profoundly affect the story you are telling.

Voice is an essential part of writing, and in this session you will look at where your voice comes from, how it sounds on the page, ways to experiment with finding the right voice for your story, and different approaches when you’re stuck.

This session will be a conversation using readings (including some reading out loud) and exercises. If you have a project underway, please bring a small sample (one page maximum) you are willing to share and discuss, but it is fine to come without one.
