With the Festival of Architecture 2019, this event is a panel discussion on the design and accessibility of public spaces from the perspective of girls in Auckland today.
Where do they go? How do they get there? What do they want to do? What obstacles are getting in their way? Are girls and young women being sufficiently well served by city planners and developers? Are parents caught in a trap of trying to find a balance between empowering their daughters and keeping their girls safe? And what is the attitude of the authorities regarding kids’ independent mobility?
In this panel, four girls and four women who work with them will discuss the realities of what it is like to grow up as a girl in Auckland today. The line-up includes Jacquelyn Collins, who is the mind behind The Girls’ Play Project and is currently researching girls’ access to skate parks, and competitive skateboarder and Girls Skate NZ founder Amber Clyde. Alex Bonham, who is currently doing a PhD on play and the city, will facilitate.
$2 per hour to a max of $12 on weekends and a $12 flat rate for weekday evenings at The Civic car park. Find out more.
