Culture Vulture

Auckland Arts Festival 2020

“Great artists steal”, or so the refrain goes. But is all really fair in love and art? How do we navigate the blurry line between appreciating and appropriating a culture that isn't ours? Should artists have the right to tell stories that don't belong to them? And how do we celebrate now-problematic figures from history?

Debating these questions are Rachel House (Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Thor: Ragnarok), Artistic director Tama Waipara (Te Tairāwhiti Arts Festival), writer and director Todd Karehana (The Kweenz of Kelston, Ahikāroa), curator and writer Matariki Williams (curator Mātauranga Māori, Te Papa) and director Anapela Polata'ivao (Wild Dogs Under My Skirt).

Part of Auckland Arts Festival’s Talks series, curated by Rosabel Tan.

$2 per hour to a max of $12 on weekends and a $12 flat rate for weekday evenings at The Civic car park. Find out more
