St Matthew-in-the-City is a spirited place where people stand, connect, and seek common ground.

The beautiful neo-Gothic stone church has European and medieval features, and is the only church of its kind in New Zealand with vaulted stone ceilings. St Matthew’s has occupied the same central city site since 1848, and the current stone church was built in 1905.

St Matthew-in-the-City have special Christmas services to know about, all are welcome to attend: 

Christmas at St Matthew-in-the-City

Sunday 15 December:

8pm: We start getting a taste of Christmas with a reading of the Christmas story and splendid music from the St Matthew's Voices. Bubbles and strawberries will follow. This service is hosted jointly with the Auckland Rainbow Community Church.

Christmas Readings & Carols at St Matthew-in-the-City

Christmas Eve:

Nativity Service for Children at St Matthew-in-the-City

7pm: The Nativity Service for Children with adults welcome too. Christmas carols will be sung and the telling of the Christmas Story will take place, with children participating.
9.30pm: Music from the brass band will play.
10.30pm - 11.30pm: Carols for Christmas. A good sing along and a few readings and poems.
11.30pm - 1am: Christmas Midnight Mass. The first Eucharist (communion service) of Christmas with music from the St Matthew’s Voices. 


Christmas Day: 

10am - 11.30am: Christmas Sung Eucharist. A Christmas service with communion, carols, a children’s talk, and music from the St Matthew’s Voices.
