Covering the Freyberg Steps, “Rebirth” is symbolic of the city’s return to life and vibrancy, after being forced into stillness and stunted by the pandemic. The artist, Eduardo Tolentino Tan seeks to capture the theme “Vitality” through the colours and elements of spring, using the mnemonic visual of swirls to depict continuous growth and liveliness after a long pause. The swirls are somewhat reminiscent of a young and unfurling frond (koru), sending a message of new life and strength.
