Our Top 5 Bars

Having a handy list of go-to places for a quiet weekday drink, or a raging Friday night with friends is crucial to filling your social calendar as a fully fledged adult.

If you’re looking for the best spots in town to make the most of your moola, or just after somewhere to have a damn good time with friends, then let me share with you five of my favourite places that are great for a quick pre-drink before a show, a quiet drink with your boo, or a night out on the town.

Metro Lanes Centre
Who doesn’t love a good game of ten pin bowling? Well match that with happy hour, and you have Metro Lanes. Yes, guilty, I’m a regular – but who can resist half priced beer and wine? And you have the option of a game of ten pin or chilling out on the deck area overlooking Aotea Square and the stunning Town Hall with a cold one. It's a great central location for all the amazing art exhibitions, musicals and theatre productions happening in the central city at the moment.

Xuxu
This used to be a bar called 'Smith Bar' that I would frequent with friends during the working week for a nice chilled glass of vino to unwind, so you would believe my shock when I showed up and it had changed to Xuxu. Xuxu is a bar where you can enjoy a selection of great beverages from western and eastern countries, and of course an amazing selection of hot dumplings to compliment your drink.

TSG
You can't go to Britomart without checking out TSG (Tyler Street Garage), if you're looking for an after party, TSG is the place to be. With different gigs happening during the week from live music to some of New Zealand's top DJs, this is the spot to down a few great beers (including their own house TSG lager) before hitting the dance floor.

Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen
My Friday night spot doesn’t get any better than Sweat Shop Brew Kitchen – they also brew their own award winning beers. They even have a brew school! This is the perfect place to hit for pre-drinks or a great place to come to after an event and get down with their resident house band 'The Beat Council'. These guys play everything from Whitney Houston to Michael Jackson from 9.30pm until the wee hours of the morning.

Little Mexico Cantina
Two words…strawberry margarita! I fell in love with this little gem on Wellesley Street about 4 years ago. The décor and atmosphere are so authentic to the Mexican culture you truly feel like you've crossed the border. I personally can't stop saying 'hola' everytime the waitress comes around (this may be the tequila) but they do the most amazing margaritas either blended with ice or no ice, which you have to try. With the best selections of tequilas and international beers, this place should be at the top of anyone’s list!
