St Patrick’s Day is just around the corner and we know the best things to do and places to go to celebrate the Irish's favourite day of the year. 

Best Irish bars:

Danny Doolans | 204 Quay St West

Celebrate the luck of the Irish at Danny Doolans this St Patrick’s Day. With live music, a wide range of whisky on offer and plenty of Murphy’s Irish Stout on tap, you are definitely in for some Irish fun.

O’Hagans | 103 Customs St West 

Visit O’Hagans Irish Pub on the Viaduct for some St Patrick’s Day festivities. Arrive early to try their $25 Irish breakfast accompanied with a pint. Then spend the rest of the day dancing along to live music and enjoy performances by traditional Irish dancers. This charming Irish Bar is guaranteed to be a good time this St Patrick’s Day.

The Fiddler | 71 Victoria St West

Pop over to The Fiddler and spend St Patrick’s day in good company. Located on Victoria street, this cheerful and cosy Irish bar has live music, Guinness on tap and beautiful views of the city from their upstairs balcony - an excellent place to check out the green skytower.

Go Green at the Bluestone Room | 9-11 Durham Lane

With giveaways, face painting, food and drink specials, live entertainment and much more, it's all happening at The Bluestone Room from 7pm until late on Friday March 15. 

Father Teds | 1 Wellesley St West

Join the St Patrick’s Day festivities at Father Ted’s traditional Irish bar. Bring your friends along and enjoy the live music and entertainment, delicious Irish cuisine and selection of Irish beers on tap. Enjoy the craic at this authentic Irish pub.

Best events/activations:

Cocktails at Beast and Butterflies | 196-200 Quay Street

Head down to Beast and Butterflies for their cocktails of the month. Their St. Paddy's Blend is a gorgeous shade of seafoam green and bursts with sweet flavours of Bushmills Irish whiskey, menthe verte liqueur, lime juice and sugar syrup. If you're looking for something creamier, their Irish Skies drink is a creamy and frothy cocktail that will bring you to cloud nine.

Returning to Auckland’s Queen Street on March 17 from noon to 3.30pm. The first St Patrick’s Parade in the world, and the only one in the Southern Hemisphere not to be missed will be followed by the Hugh Green Group Irish Music and Dance Festival taking place near Aotea Square. 

Global Greening at the Sky Tower | SKYCITY

Enjoy watching the Sky Tower go green along with 300 other iconic world buildings to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Due to our time zone, the Sky Tower will be the first building to kick off the Global Greening spectacle. Huami Bar is the place to go in SKYCITY to watch the Tower light up while enjoying a pint of Guinness.

For the very first time, SKYCITY’S Federal St will come alive with the sights and sounds of Irish traditions in the all-new St Patricks Federal Street Festival. This exciting event will host family-friendly entertainment, market stalls, face painters and more.

Visit Little Ireland | Roukai Lane

Throughout February and March, Roukai Lane in Britomart becomes Little Ireland, with Jameson drink specials, entertainment, whiskey tasting events and delicious Irish food specials. Racket Bar is also set to be transformed into the ‘Irish Boilermaker Room’ with special whiskey and beer pairings, cocktails, pickle backs and tasting boards of Jameson’s finest whiskey.

Learn about five Jameson crowd favourite whiskeys through a tasting night hosted by one of Auckland’s finest whiskey experts. All while trying Irish bar snacks and enjoying a premium whiskey tasting experience. Taste 5 whiskeys for $25 either on the 21st of February at 5.30 pm or 7 pm or 21st of March at 5.30 pm or 7 pm. Ticket price includes tasting 5 of Jameson’s Whiskeys and snacks throughout the tasting.

Ways to get into the Irish spirit:

  • Look the part on Ireland’s national day with some green accessories and Irish costumes from Look Sharp, located on 10 Victoria St East.
  • Pick up a bottle or two of Irish Whiskey from Sam Snead’s House of Whiskey. The store has a wide range of exquisite Irish whisky blends to get you into the Irish spirit this St Patrick’s Day.
  • Enjoy an Irish inspired meal at The Grill by Sean Connolly. The traditional homemade Ox Tail & Ale pie along with an ice cold guinness for $28, will have you feeling as if you’re at home in Ma’s kitchen. Available on Saturday 16th of March and Sunday 17th March from 12pm-3pm and 5:30pm-6:30pm.
