A Weekend Afternoon at the Viaduct

Spend some time relaxing by the waterfront
13 May, 2019

The Viaduct is a beautiful spot to visit for a relaxing and indulgent weekend afternoon. Surrounded by award winning eateries, yachts and the beautiful ocean it's the perfect spot to spend some time with a loved one or a few friends.

Hit the ground running with a Bottomless Brunch at The Lula Inn. Book yourself in for a two hour package deal, settle in with your choice of brunch option and some drinks appropriate for the morning. Our top pick? The Cured Salmon Potato Hash with a mimosa or two.

Another tantalizing option is a long lunch at Oyster & Chop, with euro-style dining overlooking the viaduct and boats. Of course, the fresh Bluff oysters are top notch, but don’t rule this place out if you aren’t into seafood. If that sounds like you, tuck into a croque madame.

Whichever you choose, you’ll be well and truly fueled for the afternoon ahead. Next, take a walk alongside all of the boats in the viaduct. Be sure to marvel at the America’s Cup boats on display before wandering over to the Maritime Museum. Bring out your inner sailor with the floating cabin, where you can experience what it would have been like to travel third class from Europe to New Zealand in the 19th Century.

To top up your leisurely meals that you’ve had so far, have some drinks and nibbles at Soul Bar & Bistro on the corner of Lower Hobson St and Customs Street West. Beautiful both inside and out (the all-weather terrace suits those rainy Auckland days), it’s a great place to peruse the creative signature cocktails list and try a few. If you have some herbivores with you that need a bite to eat, they’ll get a special vegetarian and vegan menu too.

For a more casual atmosphere you can find Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewing Co. just a couple of metres down the road (corner of Quay and Hobson St). You’ll need to quench your thirst after hitting up the tenpin bowling lane, which will be easy with the 14 beers on tap to choose from. With DJs playing live Wednesday through to Sunday, you can have a boogie while enjoying the view over the harbour.

Check out the Viaduct Harbour’s latest bar and restaurant Saint Alice, for some stunning sea views. The sun soaked eatery has a locally inspired menu with plenty of kia moana on offer - perfect for sharing. Order a refreshing beverage from their extensive drinks menu and relax in this beautiful space.

Meander back and forth across the Wynyard Crossing bridge, and relax for a while at the Eastern Viaduct Public Spaces. A perfect spot for some people watching before finishing the day at either White & Wong's or Euro.

Eastern Viaduct

White & Wong's is a stylish ‘east meets west’ restaurant serving up an eclectic range of Asian fare, from Hong Kong, China, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand. The knowledgeable staff will give you a hand picking out some dishes to share, and you’ll need it with over 50 items on the dynamic menu. If you’re really struggling, go for the Grand Banquet which, as it suggests, gives you a good selection of the exciting items available (think salads, curries, dumplings, fried squid, the list goes on). A delightful cocktail to match is the Blushing Buddha - Arette Blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice and mango.

Euro has been offering fresh, elegant (you guessed it) European food for 18 years now. With head chef Gareth Stewart and an ethos to showcase the very best locally sourced ingredients, the team mix tradition and innovation to create mouthwatering dishes. Tuck into the grass-fed beef tartare with smoky egg yolk, hot sauce, cacao and kumara chips. Pair that with a glass of red from the boundless wine list to wrap up a beautiful day on the city’s waterfront.
