There’s something satisfying about settling in to a chic and stylish hotel bar to meet with old or new beaus, friends or colleagues. If you know where to look, there are some pretty amazing spots around town that ooze sophistication and intimacy. And that’s what we’re here for; we’ve compiled a list of some truly top-notch hotel bars to grab a tipple.

Beast & Butterflies at M Social | 196 - 200 Quay St

Located in M Social’s waterfront location, Beast & Butterflies is a great place to catch up with friends on the fly. Pleasing on the eye and the tastebuds, enjoy the relaxed ambience while enjoying some $10 signature ‘social sodas’ during the 5-7pm happy hour. With unique and quirky concoctions that are brought around on a drinks trolley, you’ll want to test everything on the menu. Catch a glimpse of Waitemata Harbour, and people-watch across Quay Street.

Gusto at the Grand | 90 Federal St

Step into a classic Italian space, complete with white arabescato marble, gold onyx, timber floors, and Gusto’s iconic chandeliers. Tease your taste buds and appetite with Aperitivo hour daily from 5-7pm, where you can enjoy a complimentary bite with any drink purchased. With limoncello and grappa cocktails on the cards, as well as a great wine list encompassing a range of Italian and Kiwi drops, you’re bound to find something to tickle your fancy.

HI-SO Rooftop Bar | 67 Customs Street East

Located on the 16th floor of S/O Auckland’s luxury hotel is the HI-SO rooftop bar. Boasting incredible sweeping views across the Waitemata harbour and Rangitoto island, HI-SO is the ideal place to grab a drink with a friend and watch the sunset.

Housebar at Hotel DeBrett | 2 High St

After a meticulous restoration, the Housebar at the Hotel DeBrett has been transformed to its former glory. A hidden gem up the stairs inside the entance of the hotel and keeping reference to the bar’s original art deco style, Housebar is the perfect place to relax and escape from your busy life. Our favourite thing to do there is enjoy a glass of red wine by candlelight under the glass roofed soaring atrium.

Bellini Bar at the Hilton | 147 Quay St

With breathtaking harbour views, Bellini ticks all of the boxes for a seaside hotel bar. With award-winning and talented ‘mixologists’ behind the bar, ready with both fascinating history and forward-thinking flavour combinations, you can’t go wrong. You can even jump behind the bar yourself at a cocktail masterclass to get all of their tips and tricks.

Sabrage Bar at the Sofitel | 21 Viaduct Harbour Ave

At Sabrage Bar, the motto is that ‘life is too short to drink bad wine”, and we heartily agree. Choose your tipple and sip away while watching the sparkling harbour. Every Friday is a homage to the French heritage, with premium beverages at special glass prices (from 4.30-6pm). Pairing that with a delectable cheeseboard is the ultimate way to start your weekend.

The Lobby Bar at the Heritage | 35 Hobson St

Located in the landmark art deco Farmers building, the Lobby Bar is the ultimate example of heritage and modern fusion. With a mod fitout, lush greenery and an incredibly delicious, yet dietary-requirement-friendly menu, there’s a beautiful contrast between old and new. The local wine and beer selection is chock-full of winners, with vegan-friendly ones highlighted. For those after a non-alcoholic option, the freshly made juices are a delightful change of pace.

Attica at The Grand Mercure | 8 Customs St East

Situated on the top floor of The Grand Mercure, Attica offers stunning views of the Sky Tower and Britomart as you sip on one of their lovely beverages. The drinks list has everything from a fine drop of wine to a unique and locally inspired take on classic cocktails - our favourite has to be the Rose Martini. Conveniently located close to Britomart Train Station and the Ferry Building, it's the perfect place to catch up with a few friends before heading home.
