Cocktail Hour

Upgrade your Saturday in the City
4 December, 2015

Sipping on a deliciously crafted cocktail is always a sign of good times and what's better than kicking back with a delicious drink on a Saturday night in the city.

Whether you're a discerning cocktail connoisseur or more of a casual indulger, here are our top spots to enjoy an exceptional drink with the perfect atmosphere to match tonight.

Coley & Punch
This charming, old school whiskey and cocktail bar is perfectly positioned on Auckland's sparkling waterfront.

Our picks

  • C & P Margarita House infused pineapple tequila & freshly squeezed lime juice sweetened with chilli & pink peppercorn infused agave syrup. Served on the rocks with a pink peppercorn & salt rim.
  • Saffron Negroni Equal parts Saffron Gin, Campari & Noilly Prat Dry Vermouth. Stirred over ice until chilled & served over fresh ice with a burnt orange twist.

The Crew Club
Set in the historical Launchman’s building, the space boasts an unbeatable view out over the harbour and a deck that literally sits over the lapping water.

Our picks

  • HMS Monowai with Absolut, Midori, Rockmelon and Pineapple Juice
  • Rangatira with Lochan Ora plus Jack Daniel's and espresso

With a focus on shochu-based cocktails, the Fukuko drinks menu is unlike anything you'll find in the central city. Think infusions, or 'tonics' flavoured with unique cocktail ingredients such as Pineapple, Beetroot and Grapefruit.

Our picks

  • The Brown - Sugar sipper Kentucky meets Osaka in this twist on the Old fashioned. Bourbon and kokuto plum wine with Jerry Thomas Bitters.
  • The Beniotome - This or the sesame shochu is a great introduction to Fukuko's Shochu selection.
  • Earl Grey Martini - A floral infusion of Earl Grey tea into a classic martini.

Xuxu is lauded for it's brilliant dumplings, and their exotic cocktail menu makes a visit to this hidden gem well worth your while

Our pick

  • The Guilty Pleasure - El Dorado, three year old rum, mango, coconut, lime and coriander. This cheeky, fresh-flavoured drink  is simply beautiful and very easy to revisit.

Ostro Bar & Brasserie
The view is unparalleled and we find it's best enjoyed with a creative and well-thought out cocktail in hand. We love that Ostro create many of the ingredients that go into their mixes with seasonal produce dancing on your tastebuds with every sip.

Our picks

  • Raided and Traded - During the days of the East India Trading Co. pineapples were traded for gold. Spiced pineapple with toasted coconut infused white rum, fresh lime juice and orgeat.
  • Strawberry Fields - A rye influenced creation, combining house-made strawberry jam, Rye whisky, pink peppercorns, apple bitters and egg white.

This is another gem from Peter Gordon (What can we say? We're fans), situated on the treasure trove for dining and drinks that is Federal Street. We relish our visits to Bellota for spicy Spanish flavours found in their simple but glorious tapas and lively cocktail list.

Our picks

  • Matalina Caliente - Agavero tequila, chilli , lime, and sugar - you can probably tell from the ingredients in this concoction but Caliente is Spanish for hot - get ready for some kick
  • Lychee Bellini - Kwai Feh Lychee liqueur and Freixenet cava.

Cocktails at Bellota

Housebar at Hotel Debrett
This tucked away hotel in the High Street district is home to a sweet and cosy cocktail haven. Housebar does the classics well with slight twists to keep us on our toes.

Our picks

  • Elderflower Martini - with Zubrowka vodka, Elderflower cordial, clear apple juice and lemon zest
  • Negroni - We highly recommend this, one of the best made in town with Plymouth Gin, campari and sweet vermouth

The theme here is innovation, creativity and fun. The Clooney cocktail bar doesn't take itself too seriously with regular shake-ups and intriguing ingredients you wouldn't normally see on a cocktail list. We like to show up and be surprised on each visit, but to give you a taste of what we've loved in the past here are our top two.

Our picks

  • Little Ladybird - with Belvedere Pomarancza, Dubonnet, Campari, sugar-rich syrup, fresh citrus.
  • His Best Friends Girl - with 10 cane, 42below Feijoa Vodka, fresh basil, feijoa & ginger compote and chi top.
