Trains in Auckland

Getting around Central, West and South Auckland
20 September, 2017

Trains are a great way to get around Central, Southern and Western Auckland. Electric trains provide a comfortable and quiet ride with 500 services every weekday and half hourly weekend services (with hourly diesel trains to Pukekohe).

Britomart Train Station

The Britomart Train Station is housed within Auckland's downtown based main Britomart building. The train platforms are underground with services for accessibility including lifts and escalators.

The Britomart building is open to the public during the following hours: Monday to Thursday - 5am to 11pm, Friday - 5am to 1.15am, Saturday - 5.45am to 1.15am, Sunday - 5.45am to 11pm.

With bus services departing and arriving nearby the station is serviced well and is also close to the ferry terminal.

Timetables and services

Refer to the Auckland Transport website for schedules and news about services.

Fares and AT Hop cards

Fares can be paid using an AT Hop card or cash for single-trip paper tickets.

The AT Hop card is a reusable prepay smart card for travel on trains, ferries and buses around Auckland. Using the card will save you money on fares - at least 25% discount off single trip cash bus, train and ferry fares (excludes NiteRider and SkyBus bus services and Waiheke ferry services).

Discounts and concessions are available for day and monthly passes, and for children, students and accessible passengers. Senior citizens can travel for free on trains and selected bus and ferry services in Auckland, after 9am weekdays and all day weekends and public holidays with an AT HOP card loaded with a SuperGold public transport concession. See the AT website for more information about fares and discounts.

Fares are calculated based on how many zones you travel through, rather than how many buses or trains you take. Auckland is divided into thirteen fare zones.

Electric trains

Auckland's electric trains make rail travel more attractive. The trains are faster, quieter and more energy-efficient, featuring the latest developments in technology and safety.
