Gusto at the Grand
Classic Italian food is reborn in this culmination of chef Sean Connolly's time in Italy, with his love of authentic and beautifully yet plainly plated up dishes coming to Auckland.
Connolly gives a nod to the Italian style of sharing food with family and friends at Gusto, with dishes on the menu emerging as favourites very early on. The acqua pazza is made with seawater brought in daily from Coromandel, using it to cook the fish. Connolly also recommends the vitello tonnato – a slow roasted veal with tuna dressing.
The television show ‘My Family Feast’ transported Connolly to Italy, with visits to Australian homes with ethnic diversity. The sharing customs and cultural traditions appealed to the British chef who had relocated to the Antipodes. His love for Italian cuisine has been revisited and realised with this new venture at SKYCITY Auckland.
The design interior of the new restaurant is classic Italian. White arabescato marble, gold onyx, timber floors, stained American ash tables and Thonet chairs bring home the European look and feel. Rich colours and tan leathers support the design concept.
Gusto will have up to 200 wines on the menu, the majority of which are Italian. The Italian custom of drinking coffee at an espresso bar is also brought to New Zealand; something we think Aucklanders will really appreciate. The restaurant will serve buffet breakfasts, á la carte lunches and dinners plus room service for guests of the adjoining SKYCITY Grand Hotel. The restaurant boasts SKYCITY's largest private dining room which comfortably seats 28.
The artwork, which is the centrepiece of the restaurant, is by Sydney artist Jason Benjamin's. ‘Love in Venice’ is a featuring a four-metre-long octopus.
Aiming to bring back ‘cool’ to hotel dining; the restaurant is likely to be one of Auckland’s hottest new spots.
