Having moved next-door into an elegant two-level space opening into the laneway of The Hotel Britomart, Cafe Hanoi now offers more of the Asian-French inspired cuisine and atmosphere its regulars have loved for years.

The larger dining space has an open kitchen with chefs table counter seating, a conservatory with windows looking out onto Galway Street, a separate bar and a spacious mezzanine private dining room for up to 44 guests.

The best way to eat is to pull together a feast from various sections of the menu designed by Nate Houpapa: raw, bite-sized, pho, meat and poultry, salads and vegetables. Standout dishes include a Vietnamese-style charcuterie board, Chua Lua (a Vietnamese pork sausage steamed in banana leaf) and duck-breast prosciutto.

Mains include anise roast duck, chargrilled beef bavette with fish-sauce caramel, chargrilled local octopus with green chilli kaffir sauce and New Zealand clams with lemongrass ginger broth and Thai basil.

Desserts include Bosc pear tarte tatin with palm sugar ice cream; olive-oil cake with lemon gel, lime curd, lemon sorbet and chantilly; and mille feuille with pandan creme. The drinks list offers bespoke spritzers, aperitifs and cocktails created by Cafe Hanois in-house mixologist to complement the flavours of the food.

Park for $2 per hour at the Downtown car park to a maximum of $15 on evenings and weekends. Find out more
