Britomart's newest bar, Fukuko, is a small but perfectly formed breath of fresh air in Auckland's eating and drinking scene.
With a focus on shochu-based cocktails, the drinks menu is unlike anything you'll find elsewhere. Think infusions, or 'tonics' flavoured with healthy-sounding things like Pineapple, Beetroot and Grapefruit, or cocktails like the Earl Grey Martini or a Japanese twist on the classic gimlet, and try not to be tempted!
They also have a solid range of sake, Japanese whisky, plum wines and the usual beer and wine suspects.
Don't think they're just about the drinks though; the snack menu more than holds its own with dishes like fish and chips (done Fukuko-style, wrapped with toasted seaweed with wasabi tartare) and panko crumbed croquette (with sweetcorn koreke, mayo, chives & tobiko). At lunchtime, east/west fusion hits its extreme limits with 'japa dogs' (think a tonkatsu hotdog, or a standard frank spruced up with daikon and bonito flakes).
If you haven't been to Fukuko yet, you should make plans to do so immediately.
