Come and enjoy New Zealand’s largest Chinese festival celebrating the new Year of the Rooster, in the Auckland Domain from Thursday 9 until Sunday 12 February this year. 

Preview the beautiful handmade lanterns on Thursday night with Lantern Appreciation Night, then enjoy a whole host of activities and events from Friday until Sunday.  

Wander through hundreds of handmade lanterns, while sampling the best of traditional and contemporary Chinese culture. Entertainment includes music, dance and theatre performers from New Zealand and China, martial arts displays and workshops, arts and craft stalls, food stalls selling delicious, authentic Chinese cuisine and a fireworks finale.

International performers who will be in attendance this year include the Nair Ensemble, who perform their modern interpretation of traditional Mongolian folk music, including throat singing; Xinjiang province rock band sensation Askar Grey Wolf, likened to being ‘Asia’s Pink Floyd’; traditional crafts people and Sichuan Gong Fu Cha freestyle tea pourers.

On your way to the festival, you can check out the Night Noodle Markets in Kari Street Commons, a new public space in Auckland Domain. The markets are free and open to all ages, and will be open from 5.00pm until 10.00pm on Thursday, 4.00pm until 10.00pm on Friday and 1.00pm until 10.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

The 2017 Auckland Lantern Festival is a great event for the whole family and will make for a very memorable night out.
