The announcement last week by Mayor Len Brown that Auckland is now officially a Fair Trade City set us to thinking about just how many of our favourite cafés in the city already serve a Fair Trade brew.

Here’s our take on the top five cafés serving up Fair Trade coffee in the Heart of the City – try one today!

Shaky Isles

22 Customs St East, Britomart, Auckland CBD

Shaky Isles serves up Caffe L’Affare’s Gusto Fair Trade Organic certified blend, with beans from Honduras, Guatemala and Ethiopia. The cappuccino and the mocha at Shaky Isles both come with Gusto as their default blend but you can request it in any of their other coffees too.

Cargo Coffee

28 Shortland St, Auckland CBD

Cargo Coffee uses Kokako Coffee and Green Valley Organic milk to create its much-loved brew. Cargo is also a Conscious Consumers NZ certified café, which means that it has demonstrated a commitment to environmentally and socially conscious business practices.

Federal and Wolfe

Corner Federal and Wolfe Sts, Auckland CBD

Well-stocked with delicious Fair Trade Kokako Organics beans, Federal and Wolfe is renowned for its brilliant coffees and ‘gate to plate’ philosophy. The critics are fans too – last year Federal and Wolfe won Best Auckland Café in the Café Magazine Awards as well as the Lewisham Foundation Award for Outstanding Coffee Establishment.

Espresso Workshop Britomart

Atrium on Takutai, 11 Britomart Place, Auckland CBD

Espresso Workshop’s Mrs Green blend is Organic and Fair Trade certified, with beans from Sumatra, Peru and Guatemala making up the mix. The passionate baristas at Espresso Workshop will prepare your cuppa as espresso or by pour-over filter.

Grassy Knoll

21 Shortland St, Auckland CBD

One of the newest additions to Auckland’s inner-city café scene, Grassy Knoll in the Hotel DeBrett building uses Atomic’s Fair Trade Supremo and Veloce beans. They’re quickly gaining a reputation for their great food and coffee so be sure to head in and welcome them to the Heart of the City!
